Making Appliqués for Childrens Clothing
Children’s clothing from stores is often made eye-catching with the use of unique appliqués. However, this design element can be achieved with a plain shirt and a little sewing knowledge. In the succeeding paragraphs are some tips on going about this project.
Start by deciding on a design for your appliqué by leafing through children’s picture and colouring books for some design inspiration. Make sure to choose a simple design so you will be able to pull it off perfectly. Draw your image on a white paper backing of the transfer webbing. Once that is done, you can now cut out the appliqué. If you chose something with multiple pieces, make sure to label each one. Proceed to cutting out the individual sections.
Select what colour fabric to use for each section. Next, iron the sections onto the wrong side of fabric scraps of your chosen hue. Remember to follow the manufacturer’s directions on the transfer webbing when ironing. Peel the paper off the appliqué pieces that you have cut and carefully arrange them on the clothing. Finally, assemble the design and iron the pieces with the transfer side facing down.
